Elara exported the track. She titled it simply: Andromeda (Final Log) . Then she wiped the hard drive, put the reel back in its lead case, and shipped it to the grandson with a single word written on the invoice.

She worked out of a converted lighthouse on the jagged coast of Nova Scotia, a place where the wind screamed like a fretless bass. Her specialty was memory scoring —composing soundtracks for the departed. Families would send her a box of their lost one’s belongings: a cracked watch, a love letter, a voicemail. The smell of salt and mildew flooded her studio. When she opened her eyes, she was no longer in the lighthouse. She was standing at the end of a long, dark ballroom. The chandeliers were dark. The carpet was soaked. And seated at every table, facing away from her, were the passengers from the film.
