In the theatrical subtitles, the line was neutral. But the director’s cut had an alternate angle. In this version, Teddy’s lips didn’t move for the first half of the sentence. Someone else was speaking. A voice from off-screen. Dolores’s voice.

Maya added a second subtitle line, overlapping the first, using the SDH convention for off-screen dialogue: [Dolores, whispering]: Which would be worse... [Teddy, resigned]: ...to live as a monster, or to die as a good man? She rendered the subtitle file. But when she played it back, the first line didn’t appear. Only Teddy’s half remained.
