Pacar yang Hilang: A Multidimensional Analysis of Ambiguous Loss in Modern Indonesian Relationships Why has this phrase gained traction in the past decade

The phrase "pacar yang hilang" (literally "lost boyfriend/girlfriend") has become a common expression in Indonesian colloquial speech and social media discourse. This paper explores the concept through three lenses: (1) psychological 窶 ambiguous loss and unresolved grief, (2) sociocultural 窶 the impact of digital communication and ghosting, and (3) literary 窶 the romanticization of absence in Indonesian pop culture. The paper argues that "pacar yang hilang" represents more than a romantic breakup; it signifies a unique form of relational limbo where absence replaces closure, creating lasting emotional and behavioral consequences. Using qualitative interviews and textual analysis of social media posts and song lyrics, this study finds that the phenomenon is amplified by Indonesia's collectivist culture and the rise of instant messaging platforms. This paper explores the concept through three lenses:
