The MSTAR Desktop App is a Windows-based software suite that provides direct, high-speed access to Morningstar’s licensed databases. Unlike browser-based tools, it is designed for heavy data processing, complex screens, and deep-dive valuation modeling without browser latency.
| Pros | Cons | |------|------| | Blazing fast local data queries | No native macOS version (requires VM or Boot Camp) | | Full offline functionality after sync | Steeper learning curve than web apps | | Unmatched Excel integration | Legacy interface (less modern than Direct Cloud) | | Deep historical data (15+ years) | Requires an expensive institutional license |

Morningstar has announced a sunset timeline for the classic Desktop App in favor of Morningstar Direct Cloud . New clients as of 2024–2025 may not receive desktop licenses. Existing users are being migrated, but many power users retain the desktop version for its superior Excel performance and batch processing.
