But does such a thing truly exist? Let's separate fact from fiction. First and foremost, MathWorks does not offer an official portable version of MATLAB. The company’s licensing model and software architecture are designed around per-user, per-machine installations. A true portable app leaves no traces in the registry or system folders, and MATLAB is the opposite of that.
| Need | Recommended Solution | |------|----------------------| | Full MATLAB + Simulink on multiple PCs | Install MATLAB on each PC (use your license on up to 4 devices). | | Quick scripts on any PC | (free with license) or Octave Portable . | | Teaching lab without admin rights | Use MATLAB on the cloud (AWS, Azure) or Coder to convert to standalone EXEs. | | Truly offline portable numeric computing | Octave Portable or Python with NumPy/SciPy (portable via WinPython). | Final Thought The desire for a portable MATLAB comes from a real need: flexibility. But MATLAB's power—its JIT compiler, GPU support, Simulink engine, and toolbox ecosystem—is tied to a non-portable installation. Embrace official cloud tools or switch to open-source alternatives for true portability. Your USB drive will thank you. Have you tried a portable MATLAB workaround? However, the official installation from MathWorks is notorious for being large, complex, and deeply integrated into the Windows Registry. This leads many to search for a holy grail: a version that can run from a USB stick or an external drive without installation. But does such a thing truly exist
