Today, the Rhythm was wrong.

The fever pulse was coming from a single point: a massive, clot-like tumor wrapped around her lower spine. As Elara watched, a tendril from the tumor lashed out, drawing fresh nutrient gel from a main line. The Mother’s body flinched. The entire Tube shuddered. She didn't have a cure. She didn't have a miracle. She had a thermal lance and a map back to the surface. But she also had two hands and a heart that now beat in time with the Mother’s flawed, tragic song. Today, the Rhythm was wrong

And in that grief, Elara found the first, tiny, beating node of healthy, new tissue—a daughter cell, blind and ignorant, waiting to be born from the ruins of the long, mature mother. The Mother’s body flinched

Elara touched the warm, veined wall of the chamber. She leaned her forehead against it.

Elara didn’t remember the world before the Tube. The elders said it had been a place of chaotic weather, jagged geography, and short, brutish lives. Now, humanity lived inside the Long Mature Tube.
