This philosophy turned into action when he became the head of the Srirangam temple, the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world. Here, Ramanuja did the unthinkable. The temple’s sacred mantras, the Tirumantram and the Charama Sloka , were considered “household secrets,” whispered only to elite, upper-caste men. Ramanuja climbed the temple’s gopuram (gateway tower) and, before a crowd of thousands—including outcasts and shudras—shouted the sacred formulas for all to hear. His teacher, explaining a verse about a frog’s eyes, claimed it meant the “lotus-like eyes” of the lord were merely a figure of speech. Ramanuja, weeping, retorted, "Do not slander the Lord!
