Aunt Clara came out with two mugs of coffee. She looked at the sculpture for a long time. Then she nodded once, handed Kimberly a mug, and said, “Your mother would’ve hated it.”

It was filled with drawings. Sketches of a little girl with wild hair and too-long legs, running through desert landscapes that looked exactly like the ones outside Kimberly’s window.
