Eleven circles arranged in a spiraling chain. The first ten were dark. The eleventh—the one in the center—was lit with a soft, pulsing blue. The same blue as the Earth’s deep oceans.

It was a map.

It wasn't rock. It was a single, seamless sheet of polished obsidian, stretching up into the crushing blackness and down into the abyssal plain. At 11,000 meters, the pressure should have turned carbon into diamond, yet here was a surface smooth as a calm sea.
